AMRITSAR: A man opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former deputy chief minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar Wednesday morning. The incident happened while he was serving his penance at the entrance of the temple. The man opened fire twice at Badal.
Badal aged 62 is performing sewadar duties after the Akal Takht pronounced the 'tankhah' (religious punishment) for him and several other Akali Dal leaders for the mistakes committed during the party's rule in Punjab from 2007 to 2017. He has been asked to serve as a 'sewadar', wash dishes and clean shoes at Golden Temple and several other gurdwaras.

Badal was sitting at the gate of the temple with a spear in one hand and dressed in blue sewadar uniform. His leg is in a cast and is in a wheelchair.
The shooter was overpowered by people present there and handed him over to the police. Police said the shots hit the wall but no casualties have been reported. The accused has been identified as Narain Singh from Gurdaspur. The visuals show him approaching the gate. He then takes out his gun and a man standing near Badal sees him and holds his hand.
