DHAKA: Bangladesh police have again filed a case against former ISKCON member Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari and hundreds of his followers in connection with the ongoing riots in the country. Monk Chinmoy Das has been named as the main accused. A case has also been filed against 164 followers and around 500 unidentified people.

The case was taken on the complaint of Inamul Haq, an activist of Hefazat-e-Islam. According to Haq, he was attacked by supporters of Chinmoy Das at the Chittagong court premises on November 26 for wearing traditional clothes. Haq, in the complaint, said that he had to seek treatment at the hospital after injuring his right arm and head in the attack.

Police had earlier registered a case against several people following the clashes related to the detention of Chinmoy Das. A businessman had filed a complaint on December 3, alleging that political activists and ISKCON members were attacked near Rangam Cinema Theatre. Chinmoy Krishnadas, who was arrested on charges of sedition, is currently in police custody. His bail application will be considered on January 2. The former ISKCON priest’s arrest worsened the diplomatic relationship between India and Bangladesh.

Relations between the two countries soured after the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus took office in August. Mohammad Tawheed Hussain, who is in charge of the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry, recently admitted to having strain in the bilateral relationship with India.
