NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police has registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, the opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, in connection with the clash that occurred in the Parliament compound over the Ambedkar remark row. The case was registered on the complaint lodged by BJP MP Hemang Joshi from Gujarat. According to reports, the police registered the case after seeking legal advice.
Earlier in the day, both the NDA and INDIA bloc MPs had staged a protest in Parliament premises, when a scuffle broke out between the two sides, injuring two BJP MPs. The Congress MPs staged the protest march outside the Parliament accusing Union Home Minister Amit Shah of insulting Dr BR Ambedkar during his speech. The opposition MPs, dressed in blue, carried Ambedkar's picture and demanded Shah's resignation. In the meantime, BJP MPs counter-protested at Makar Dwar, claiming Nehru had betrayed Ambedkar. The situation escalated into clashes when opposition MPs marched towards the BJP march. Rahul Gandhi and other Congress MPs were accused of physically assaulting and insulting BJP MPs, including a female member.
Following the clash, the BJP lodged a complaint against Rahul Gandhi alleging physical assault and misbehaviour. The complaint, filed at the Parliament Street Police Station, accused Gandhi of attempting to murder BJP MPs and speaking insultingly to a woman member. According to Union Minister Anurag Thakur, two Lok Sabha members sustained injuries due to Gandhi's actions, with one of them in serious condition. Union Minister Kiran Rijiju went further, alleging that Gandhi behaved like a "goon" in front of the Parliament.
The complaint was filed under sections 109, 115, 117, 121, 125, and 351, with the BJP alleging that Gandhi was responsible for the disruptions in Parliament today. BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi alleged that he was injured after Rahul Gandhi pushed another MP, who then fell on him. Sarangi claimed that he was standing near the stairs when another MP fell on him, leading to an injury to his head.
Reacting to the allegations, Rahul Gandhi, in his defence, said that he was trying to get inside the Parliament when he was also pushed and threatened by the BJP MPs who were protesting near the entrance. He also alleged that Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge was also pushed. Rahul's sister and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi hit back at the BJP saying that the ruling party and its MPs were raising baseless allegations to deliberately insult Rahul Gandhi.
