SIVAGIRI: Minister KN Balagopal said that Guru Deva gave permission for the Sivagiri pilgrimage for the complete purification of mankind and this is clear from the instructions given along with the permission. He also pointed out that this is why pilgrimage has become a forum for discussing different ideas. He was inaugurating the science and technology conference which is part of the Sivagiri pilgrimage.

"Conflicts are increasing in many parts of the world on account of caste and religious beliefs. Guru Deva's vision is becoming more relevant in this context. Everyone should achieve knowledge, prosperity and economic progress. The Sivagiri pilgrimage is a great platform to project such thoughts," Balagopal pointed out.

Dr Kuruvilla Joseph, Registrar and Dean, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology who presided said that we are passing through the time of the explosion of science and technology where humans have to compete with intelligent machines. "We are entering an era where man and machines work together. What human life will be like by 2050 is unpredictable. Plastic waste is the biggest problem at present. Three things are desirable to deal with the crisis. One is to reduce production, two is to reuse the produced, and three is to convert it into value-added products. The best way is to switch to green protocol. Plastic use can be controlled by utilizing natural materials," he pointed out.

Former Director, Center for Development of Telematics, Prof Dr Achyut Shankar S Nair said that machines have reached a stage where they can learn anything and that is the foundation of artificial intelligence. "Artificial intelligence is only five years old. As it matures, it becomes a prodigious talent. The IT sector is an environment-impacting industry," he noted.

Center for Development of Advanced Computing Associate Director Dr Senthilkumar KB, Sivagiri Ashram of UK General Secretary Baiju Palakal and former MLA Varkala Kahar spoke. Swami Dharmachaitanya, secretary of Aluva Advaita Ashram, gave the welcome speech and Mangad Balachandran, editor of Sree Narayanaguru Vignanakosam, gave the vote of thanks.
