NEW DELHI: Kiran Kumar, the accused in the Vismaya case, has approached the Supreme Court seeking quashing of the 10-year prison sentence handed down by the trial court and requesting bail. Kiran approached the apex court after the High Court rejected his plea.
In his petition filed through Advocate Deepak Prakash, Kiran Kumar argued: "There is no evidence against me. I have been wrongly convicted and am a victim of a media trial. Despite filing an appeal in the High Court over two years ago, there has been no resolution. I have been in prison for nearly four years." He also highlighted that he had been granted parole for a month on December 18 due to good conduct in jail.
On June 21, 2021, Vismaya, a resident of Nilamel, was found dead by suicide at her husband's home in Sasthamkotta, Kollam. Kiran Kumar was convicted by the Kollam trial court for offences, including dowry harassment and abetment of suicide, and sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 12.55 lakh. At the time of their marriage, Vismaya's family had provided Kiran Kumar with 100 sovereigns of gold, 1.5 acres of land, and a car worth Rs 10 lakh.
