CHENNAI: Upending all the previous set norms in the Tamil film industry, actor Vishal’s ‘Madha Gaja Raja', now in theatres after 12 years of delay, has emerged as the Pongal winner. The movie has reportedly grossed more than Rs five crore in just two days.

The movie directed by Sundar C was completed in 2012 but got shelved for financial reasons and script revisions. The makers had little to no expectation when it came to releasing the movie 12 years later in 2025 but the odds have been beaten this time. The film has Vishal and Santhanam in the lead while Anjali, Varalakshmi Sarathkumar and Sonu Sood are among the ensemble cast.

The word of mouth and the promotional event of the movie held some days back went viral across social media. The fever affected Vishal getting on stage with shivering hands during the promotional event was the talk of the town. Despite being Pongal season, there are now superstar releases in Tamil Nadu this year. ‘Madha Gaja Raja’ is taking advantage of this void and is running in packed theatres.
