MALAPPURAM: More details have come out regarding the incident in which a 19-year-old newlywed bride named Shahana Mumtaz committed suicide in Malappuram. According to Shahana's relative Abdul Salam, Shahana's husband Abdul Wahid called her and complained about her skin complexion just 20 days after their wedding, after he had left for a foreign country.

Shahana's relatives claim that she committed suicide as she was not able to bear the continuous humiliation and derogatory remarks made by her husband regarding her skin colour. The young bride from Kondotty was found hanging at her home yesterday around 10 PM. Shahana’s family has filed a complaint with the police against Abdul Wahid and his family. The family alleges that Shahana was mentally harassed by her husband, who repeatedly insulted her for her darker complexion and her lack of fluency in English.

“The mother-in-law questioned Shahana, asking her why she was clinging on to this marriage. She told Shahana that only 20 days had passed since the marriage and that she could still get another husband. The lack of communication from her husband for several days caused Shahana significant emotional distress. She had sent him over 150 messages pleading for just one phone call," a relative said.
