Kolkata Medical College murder
The brutal murder of a young female doctor at RG Kar Medical College sent shockwaves across the country. The accused, Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civil volunteer with Kolkata Police, was on security duty at the hospital when the crime occurred. The doctor was found dead in the seminar room on the morning of August 9, 2024.
Sanjay Roy was arrested the following day, but widespread criticism of the West Bengal police's investigation led the Kolkata High Court to transfer the case to the CBI on August 13. The trial concluded on January 9.
The charges against the accused, filed under sections 64 (rape), 66 (death following sexual assault), and 103-1 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), could result in either a death sentence or life imprisonment. The incident had sparked nationwide protests by doctors, forcing the Mamata Banerjee-led government into a crisis. The doctors eventually withdrew their strike after the Supreme Court intervened.
The fate of Greeshma
In the shocking Parassala case, Greeshma, a 24-year-old woman, lured her boyfriend Sharon to her home and served him a herbal drink mixed with pesticide, leading to his death. The Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court heard arguments yesterday, with the prosecution demanding the death penalty, labelling her behaviour as "diabolical."
The court questioned Greeshma directly, who requested leniency due to her young age and lack of a prior criminal record. She submitted her Master’s degree certificate and mark sheets as proof of her intent to pursue further studies.
