BIJAPUR: Another encounter between security forces and Maoists in Chhattisgarh. The encounter took place in a forest under Gangaloor police station limits in Bijapur. Eight Maoists were killed in the encounter by security forces. A search operation is underway in the area on suspicion of more Maoists.
The encounter between Maoists and security forces took place around 8.30 am today. Security forces reached the forest after receiving intelligence about the presence of Maoists. The Maoists opened fire during a search operation conducted by security forces as part of the anti-Maoist operation. Officers from the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and CRPF's elite unit CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) were part of the operation.
14 Maoists, including their leader who had a bounty of Rs 1 crore, were killed by security forces in an encounter in Gariaband on the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border on January 21. Senior Central Committee member Chalapathy was among those killed. The security forces had put a bounty of Rs 1 crore on Chalapathy. The operation was carried out by police from both states, CoBRA commandos from Chhattisgarh, Odisha Special Operations Group and CRPF. 12 Maoists were killed on January 16, in an encounter with joint security forces in a forest in the southern part of Bijapur district.
