THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Security forces remain on high alert due to the continuous flying of drones over the runway of the Thiruvananthapuram airport. 'Operation Udaan' was launched with the assistance of ISRO to track down those operating the drones. Two cases were registered after the investigations revealed that high-quality China-made drones, which are easily available online, were being used. Two cases have been registered. However, no suspects have been caught yet. Recently, a drone had crashed onto the airport runway. Using the police’s anti-drone system, drones within a five-kilometre radius can be detected and brought down by jamming their radio frequency or using lasers. Just like a mobile phone’s IMEI number, drones also have unique identification numbers, allowing authorities to trace their origin.

Police seize drones
Drones had previously been spotted near highly secured areas such as the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple and the police headquarters. At that time, police seized 15 drones. Drones were also seen flying from Kovalam to Thumba and above overbridges. In 2019, drones were flown near sensitive locations like the Coast Guard headquarters, the Southern Air Command base, and the Pangode Army station, which led to an investigation by military intelligence.

Risk of drone collisions with aircraft

  1. A collision could cause the aircraft to lose control, with the drone’s fast-spinning propellers increasing the impact.
  2. The engine could malfunction and catch fire, and digital control systems could fail.
  3. Some drones, equipped with night-vision cameras, weigh over two kilograms. Due to the possibility of drones carrying explosives, authorities are maintaining strict vigilance.

Two-year jail term
Flying drones within a five-kilometre radius of airports is illegal. Violating this rule can lead to two years of imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹10 lakh under the Aircraft Act.
