LAHORE: Australia secured victory in a thrilling Champions Trophy encounter against England. The reigning world champions successfully chased down England’s massive target of 352 runs with five wickets in hand and 15 balls to spare. Despite arriving in Pakistan without five of their key players, Australia sent a strong message to other teams with this emphatic win. The standout performances came from Josh Inglis, who smashed a brilliant century, and Matthew Short and Alex Carey, who contributed vital half-centuries to help Australia achieve the challenging target.

Chasing 352, Australia had a shaky start. Opener Travis Head (6 off 5 balls) and captain Steve Smith (5 off 6 balls) fell early, leaving the team struggling at 27/2 in 4.1 overs. However, a crucial 95-run partnership between Matthew Short (63 off 66) and Marnus Labuschagne (47 off 45) helped stabilize the innings.

England regained momentum when Labuschagne departed when the score stood at 122 and Short followed at 136, raising hopes of a comeback. But Josh Inglis (120 not out off 86 balls) and Alex Carey (69 off 63 balls) turned the match in Australia’s favour with a game-changing 146-run partnership. By the time Carey was dismissed in the 42nd over, Australia was on the verge of victory. Glenn Maxwell (32 not out off 15 balls) then provided the finishing touches, ensuring Australia’s win.

Earlier, after losing the toss and being put to bat first, England posted a formidable 351/8 in 50 overs. The highlight of their innings was a spectacular century by Ben Duckett (165 off 143 balls). Former captain Joe Root (68 off 78) also contributed with a half-century, forming a crucial 158-run partnership for the third wicket with Duckett, which powered England to a big total. For Australia, Ben Dwarshuis took three wickets, while Adam Zampa and Marnus Labuschagne claimed two each. Glenn Maxwell also chipped in with a wicket.
