One killed in clash between Kuki sect members and security forces in Manipur; several injured, curfew imposed

IMPHAL: Protests in the Kuki area over the resumption of bus services as part of ensuring travel facilities in Manipur. One person died in a clash that broke out after protesters, including women, blocked a bus in Kangpokpi. Several people were injured.

The attack took place on a bus going to Senapati district on National Highway 2 in the Gamgiphai area of ​​Kangpokpi district. Protesters, including women, stopped the bus and burned tyres. Private vehicles were also attacked. Roads were dug up, blocked by barricades and made impassable. Security forces lathi-charged and fired tear gas after protesters threw explosives. Following the clashes, District Magistrate Mahesh Chaudhary imposed prohibitory orders on National Highway 2 in Kangpokpi, Champai, and Saitu-Gamphazol subdivisions.

Bus services started from Imphal airport from 10 am with central security following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's directive to ensure freedom of movement in all areas of Manipur. Manipur State Transport (MST) buses operated on the Imphal-Kangpokpi-Senapati route and another on the Imphal-Bishnupur-Churachandpur route routes. Helicopter services from Imphal to Churachandpur and Ukhrul have also been announced. More than 250 people have died and about 50,000 people have been displaced in the violence that has been going on since May 2023.
