KASARAGOD: Nursing student who attempted suicide in Kanhangad dies. Chaitanya, a third-year nursing student at Manzoor Hospital & School of Nursing, died. She is a native of Panathur, Kasaragod. Chaitanya attempted suicide in her hostel room at Kanhangad Nursing College on December 7. She died while undergoing treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.
The students had staged a protest, alleging that the girl attempted suicide due to mental harassment by the hostel warden. The students had made serious allegations against the warden. "When Chaitanya was unwell, the warden did not even offer her food. Even when she was unwell, the mental harassment continued. Chaitanya tried to commit suicide because she could not bear it. The management did not inform the students. The warden continued to mentally torture Chaitanya, who had health issues including lower blood pressure," friends had alleged. The hospital authorities told the police that the student was suffering from mental problems as she could not prepare properly for the exam due to health problems. The students had alleged that these claims were false.
Various student political organizations had staged a protest against the student's attempted suicide. Following this, the warden Rajani was suspended. Chaitanya's medical expenses were borne by the hospital authorities. Chaitanya was initially admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru. The girl, who was in a coma, was later shifted to Kozhikode Medical College. The funeral will be held tomorrow.
