OTTAWA: Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that a general election will be held in Canada on April 28. Carney asked Governor Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament. The election was supposed to be held by October. Carney said that the government needs strong public support to address the challenges Canada is currently facing, including the trade war with the US.
Carney, who was elected leader of the Liberal Party following the resignation of Justin Trudeau, took office as prime minister on the 14th of this month. Carney is an economist and former governor of the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada. It is Carney's responsibility to regain lost popularity and prepare the party for the election in a short time.
US President Donald Trump claims that he will make Canada the 51st state of the US. Therefore, Carney will use countering US threats as a campaign weapon. Carney will face strong competition from Conservative Party leader Pierre Poliyev, New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh, and Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet.
