NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the Allahabad High Court's controversial observation that grabbing a girl's breasts and breaking her pyjama strings do not constitute rape or attempted rape.

A bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Augustine George Masih will hear the matter today. Senior advocate Indira Jaising had also sought the Supreme Court's intervention in the matter. The bench headed by Justice Bela M. Trivedi had dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) filed against the observation on Monday. It is noteworthy that another bench has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter after this.
