NEDUMBASSERY: A KSRTC driver, who experienced sudden physical discomfort, stopped the bus by the roadside. With no immediate transport available to take him to the hospital, a quick-thinking passenger took control of the bus and drove it to safety, ensuring the driver received timely medical attention.
The incident occurred yesterday at around 5:30 PM near Kariyad Junction on the national highway. The driver, Bijoy, a native of Chalakudy, was operating a fast passenger bus on the Mundakayam–Thrissur–Ernakulam route from the Irinjalakuda depot when he collapsed due to illness. Despite his condition, he managed to move the bus safely to the roadside before losing strength.
As no other vehicle was available to rush him to the hospital, a passenger with a heavy vehicle driving license volunteered to drive the bus. After showing his driving license to the conductor for verification, he took control of the vehicle and drove it to Desam C.A. Hospital.
The driver was diagnosed with high blood pressure, low blood sugar, and severe fever. He started feeling fatigued after reaching Thrissur from Mundakayam and was en route to Ernakulam when his condition worsened. There were 56 passengers on board at the time of the incident.
