MUMBAI: With the widespread popularity of UPI, it has become the primary mode of money transfer for most people. A sudden UPI outage or lack of internet connectivity can cause major inconvenience, especially while travelling by train. To address such issues during train journeys, Indian Railways has introduced a new facility: an ATM onboard a moving train.
Central Railway has installed an ATM on a trial basis in the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express. The ATM has been set up inside an AC coach of the train in collaboration with the Bank of Maharashtra.
"This is an experimental initiative by Central Railway in the Panchavati Express," said Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway.
The ATM has been installed in the last coach of the Panchavati Express, in the space that was previously used as the pantry area. To ensure safety while the train is in motion, the area has been fitted with a shutter door. The modification of the coach was carried out at the Manmad Railway Workshop.
The Panchavati Express runs daily between Mumbai CSMT and Manmad Junction in the Nashik district. In addition to this initiative, Central Railway is also introducing 14 new air-conditioned local trains on this route.
