NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized the central government over the Pahalgam terror attack. Kharge pointed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had received an intelligence report that an attack would take place in Kashmir and that is why he postponed his visit to Kashmir. Kharge added that the intelligence report was sent to the Prime Minister three days before the Pahalgam attack on April 22.
‘The attack in Kashmir is a failure of intelligence. The government should accept that. If they knew about the attack, why did they not do anything? I have received information that an intelligence report was sent to Prime Minister Modi three days before the attack and that is why he cancelled his visit to Kashmir. I read this in a newspaper,' Kharge said.
Kharge also said that the government has admitted that there was an intelligence failure in the attack in which terrorists opened fire on tourists who were vacationing in Pahalgam and claimed the lives of 26 people. ‘They say they will improve. Our question is, why didn't you make arrangements even after knowing about the attack,’ he asked.
India Today had reported that the central government admitted to the security lapses in the Pahalgam terror attack in a closed-door meeting on April 24. The government reportedly said in response to questions from opposition leaders that the local authorities had not informed security agencies before opening the Baisaran area near Pahalgam in Anantnag. The area remains under control until the Amarnath Yatra in June.
