KAYAMKULAM: Athira K Pillai's patriotism touched the crescendo when news reached her about India’s successful interception of Pakistan drones and missiles. The 30-year-old is the only Malayali riflewoman in the Assam Rifles.

Athira works in the Information Warfare section of the Rifle Movement General Duty. She was on guard duty at an Indian Army post in Ganderbal Kashmir, until April 5. The terror attack in Pahalgam came only after she returned home completing four years of service in Kashmir. She will return to military unit in Mizoram on the 23rd. Athira is sure enough of Pakistan encountering tougher days ahead after provoking India.

Kayamkulam Pullikkanakku native Athira was the only Malayali woman in Assam Rifles four years ago. Today, there are 30 women in the unit, including three Malayalis. Athira got the job of her father Keshava Pillai, who died while in service.

Military service has been Athira's dream since childhood. After her education at Mandiram LPS and VVHS Thamarakulam, she studied privately and earned a degree before joining the recruitment camp in Shillong. Athira has completed her stint at both Nagaland and Manipur before heading to Kashmir.

Athira’s family:

Mother: Jayalaskhmi

Husband: Smithish, an expatriate.

Brother: Abhilash.
