KASARAGOD: Notices have been issued for fines of up to one lakh rupees for violations recorded in the AI camera in Kumbala in the last three years. The Motor Vehicles Department has issued notices to about 300 vehicle owners. No one had received a notice for visuals caught in this camera installed in 2023. Drivers thought that the footage was not being captured on the camera.
The fines were imposed after examining the footage from the AI cameras installed on Bandiyod Adka Road and Kumbala- Badiyadka Road. Most of the violations were recorded on the camera installed near Kumbala Town on the Kumbala-Badiyada road. Not wearing a seat belt and not wearing a helmet were the most common violations.
Tempo driver fined one lakh
Tempo driver Sandeep from Babrana has been issued a notice to pay a fine of one lakh for violations recorded on the cameras at Bandiyod Adka and on the Kumbala-Badiyada road.
Naveen, the owner of a two-wheeler garage in Kumbala, has also been fined Rs 5,000. Many have also received notices to pay fines ranging from a quarter of a lakh to fifteen thousand and ten thousand respectively from 2023 to 2025. Many have complained to the Transport Minister and top officials of the department, stating that they cannot pay the accumulated fines. They said that they will approach the High Court if no action is taken.
Against the Central Law
The Union Transport Ministry has directed that if an electronic violation is detected, a challan should be sent to the owner within at least 15 days. In 2023, the Kerala High Court had criticized the Motor Vehicles Department in a similar complaint. It is suspected that the fines were accumulated due to a technical glitch in the AI camera.
