WASHINGTON: The United States has once again asserted that it played a key role in de-escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The remarks were made by US Ambassador Dorothy Shea during her address at the UN Security Council. The US also condemned China’s claims in the South China Sea and the methods it employs to enforce them.

Currently, Pakistan — which is not a permanent member of the 15-member council — is serving as the president of the UN body for the month of July. Under its presidency, Pakistan has organised two events on the themes of “Promoting international peace and security through multilateralism and the peaceful settlement of disputes” and “Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations.” The US made its latest claims during an open discussion at one of these events.

During the discussion, the US representative stated that over the past three months, the US had helped reduce tensions between Israel and Iran, Congo and Rwanda, and India and Pakistan. The representative further highlighted that the United States, under President Trump’s leadership, played a significant role in resolving such conflicts. Both Trump and his administration have made similar claims in the past about mediating between India and Pakistan.

Responding to the US statement, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, remarked:
“There is no standardised approach to conflict resolution. Any such efforts must take into account the evolving contexts and circumstances. As a responsible nation and a founding member of the United Nations, India remains committed to working collectively for a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world. India continues to actively engage at the United Nations, particularly in such initiatives.”
