Notorious criminal Govindachamy held; police pull him out of well

KANNUR: Notorious criminal Govindachamy, who jumped from Kannur Jail early Friday morning, has been caught. He was caught from the well of an empty building in Talap. He was caught in a search conducted following information provided by locals. As soon as he saw the police, he jumped into the well. The police pulled him out of the well.

When he was pulled out of the well, he was in black pants. He will be questioned in detail. An investigation will be conducted on whether he got any help from anyone to jump the jail. Jail DGP Balram Kumar Upadhyay said that he jumped jail with an accurate plan.

Initial reports said Govindachamy jumped jail at around 1.15 am Friday. However, the police later informed that he escaped after 4.15 am. A search was conducted outside Kannur city, Kozhikode and Kasaragod outside the state to trace him. In the meanwhile, locals had responded that they had seen him. Accordingly, a search was conducted using the dog squad.

Govindachamy sexually abused the woman on February 1, 2011. She was an employee of a private company in Kochi. She was returning home in the train after work. Govindachamy pushed the woman, who was alone in the women's compartment, out of the train, dragged her into the bushes and raped her. She died on February 6 while undergoing treatment at Thrissur Medical College.


One-armed Govindachamy is a native of Virudhachalam in Tamil Nadu. He is also known as Charley Thomas. He is accused in several cases in Tamil Nadu, including theft.
