KOCHI: Actor Baburaj is likely to opt out from the race for the post of general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). It is heard that his decision is following pressure from senior actors. Many including women actors, had strongly opposed the race of Baburaj, who was granted anticipatory bail in a rape case. When actors facing allegations had stayed away from the contest, Baburaj facing polls was criticised. Actress Mallika Sukumaran harshly criticized Baburaj.

Despite public criticism, Baburaj was adamant that he would not back out from the polls. Reports said Mohanlal and Mammootty finally intervened in the matter and he changed his stand after that. However, the actor has not withdrawn his nominations. The deadline to withdraw the nomination is till this evening. Baburaj had filed his nomination for the posts of general and joint secretary. It is reported that he decided to withdraw the nomination for the post of general secretary. Apart from Baburaj, Anoop Chandran, Raveendran, Jayan Cherthala and Cuckoo Parameswaran are in the fray for the post of general secretary.

Actor Jagadish had earlier withdrawn from the race for the post of president. Jagadish's stand is that the organization should be led by a woman president. It is reported that he withdrew from the race in this situation. Reports say that Jagadish withdrew after talking to senior actors.
