KOCHI: Actor Anoop Chandran has demanded that actor Baburaj, who is currently out on anticipatory bail in a rape case, should not contest for the post of General Secretary of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). Anoop alleged that Baburaj’s candidature is aimed at protecting personal interests and claimed that women like Ansiba Hassan are closely associated with Baburaj. He also noted that there are two differing opinions within the organisation regarding accused individuals contesting the elections.

“Women like Ansiba are functioning as Baburaj's supporters. Their aim is to mock actresses such as Kukku Parameswaran, Shweta Menon, Ananya, and Sarayu. There has also been large-scale financial mismanagement within AMMA,” Anoop said.

Ansiba, on the other hand, welcomed the participation of accused individuals in the elections. She argued that ministers and politicians accused of various charges also contest elections. “Politics is larger than this organisation. If accused people can contest there, why is it an issue here?” she questioned.

The new elections were prompted by revelations of harassment allegations against certain members of AMMA following the Hema Committee report. This eventually led to the resignation of the entire executive committee. Former president Mohanlal also voluntarily stepped down from the organisation. An ad-hoc committee was later formed to manage AMMA’s affairs until the new elections.
