NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has ruled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degree certificate does not need to be made public. The court quashed an earlier order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) which had directed Delhi University to provide the certificate for verification. The order came in response to a petition filed by Delhi University challenging the CIC directive.
Activist Neeraj Sharma had sought details of Modi’s 1978 Bachelor’s degree in Political Science under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Delhi University, opposing the request, argued that while the certificate could be shown to the court, it could not be handed over to unknown individuals with political motives. The hearing in the case was completed in February, and the verdict was reserved. Delivering the judgment today, the High Court upheld the university’s position. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta appeared for Delhi University.
