KABUL: The death toll from a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has surpassed 800. More than 2,500 people have been injured. The districts of Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapadare were the worst hit. Tremors were also felt in parts of Pakistan. The death toll and injuries are expected to rise.
Media reports suggest that many people are still trapped under the rubble. Rescue workers are still on the scene due to the difficulty of reaching the area, officials said. The injured have been shifted to hospitals and the death toll will rise as reports from other districts come in, said Najibullah Hanif, the provincial information head for Kunar.
The US Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 11:47 pm local time on Sunday. The epicenter was 27 km northeast of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province. The earthquake struck at a depth of eight km. Massive damage is being reported in the country.
