NEW YORK: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised US President Donald Trump while addressing the general debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. Shehbaz said that Trump made the ceasefire in the India-Pakistan conflict possible and that Trump should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He claimed that the Pakistani army achieved victory and shot down Indian aircraft. Shahbaz's change of position comes within days after Pakistan's Defense Minister clarified that there was no third party intervention in the ceasefire.
Hours before the address, Shahbaz and Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir met Trump at the White House. The media was not allowed to attend the meeting. Economic cooperation, rare earth and oil exploration, etc. were discussed. Shahbaz invited American companies to invest in Pakistan. Trump also reportedly expressed support for Shahbaz in combating the terrorist threat emanating from Afghanistan. Trump described Shahbaz and Munir as "great guys" before the meeting.
India had already stated that the conflict was ended through military-level talks at the request of Pakistan. Pakistan had also admitted that air bases and soldiers were lost in the Indian attack.
