One more succumbs to injuries in Karur tragedy, toll touches 41, no permission for Vijay to visit Karur

CHENNAI: The death toll in the tragedy that happened during a rally organized by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has touched 41. The dead is 65-year-old Suguna, who was seriously injured and undergoing treatment. About 50 people are undergoing treatment presently. 55 people have been discharged from the hospital. Vijay, who went to Chennai after the tragedy, had sought permission to visit Karur, but the police have denied permission. Vijay is presently at his home in Chennai.

Most of the dead are natives of Karur. 39 people lost their lives on Friday night when the tragedy occurred. A 32-year-old youth, who was discharged from the hospital yesterday had died soon after reaching home. Suguna died today. The judicial inquiry announced by the state government into the tragedy is still ongoing.

The Madras High Court is considering all the cases filed by Vijay and against him in connection with the rally today. TVK's future plans will depend on the court's stand. Stalin had earlier directed DMK leaders not to criticize Vijay by mentioning his name. Meantime, the AIADMK also reacted cautiously to the incident. No one criticized Vijay strongly. The other day, the Tamil Nadu BJP had criticized the government for not sending enough police force.
