THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The death of Amal Babu (25) has left an entire village in tears, but he will continue to live through four other people. Amal, who was loved dearly by his friends, lost his life in a road accident. On Thursday, his heart was flown from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi on a Home Department helicopter and transplanted into a 33-year-old man from Ponnani, Malappuram, at Lisie Hospital, Ernakulam.
Amal Babu, a native of Thachottukavu, Malayinkeezhu in Thiruvananthapuram, met with an accident on the night of October 12th while returning home from work. His bike collided with a car, leaving him critically injured. He was admitted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, but on Wednesday, doctors confirmed brain death. His family then came forward to donate his organs, including his heart, liver, and kidneys.
One kidney was donated to a patient at Thiruvananthapuram Government Medical College, while the other kidney and liver went to patients at KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. Amal worked at a private company in Eenchakkal, Thiruvananthapuram. He is survived by his father, A. Babu (retired Sub-Inspector), mother Shimla Babu, and sister Arya. The funeral will be held today.
Heart flown to Kochi
Amal’s heart is now beating inside Ajmal (33), a native of Malappuram. Ajmal had suffered a major heart attack in January this year while working abroad. Doctors had advised a heart transplant, and he was admitted to Lisie Hospital for treatment.
On Wednesday, the heart was taken from KIMS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, around 1 p.m., and transported by ambulance to the domestic airport. From there, it was flown to Kochi by helicopter, and then taken by ambulance from the Grand Hyatt helipad to Lisie Hospital, where the transplant surgery took place successfully.
No death for memories
Until two years ago, Amal used to help out at a friend’s turf ground in Thachottukavu. Everyone who played there remembers his bright smile and friendly nature. He was deeply loved by all and was also a talented football player.
“We thank the family for their generosity in donating organs despite their deep grief. The Chief Minister had directed that the Home Department helicopter be arranged for the heart transport. Thanks to everyone who made this mission possible.”
- Veena George, Health Minister
