KOTTAYAM: Kottayam Medical College has set a national example by successfully performing a rare multiple organ transplant, where the heart, lungs, and a kidney were transplanted on the same day. After AIIMS Delhi, this is the first time a lung transplant has been done in a government hospital in India.

This was the 11th heart transplant conducted at the medical college. The heart and lung transplant surgeries were led by cardiothoracic surgeon and superintendent Dr T.K. Jayakumar, while the kidney transplant was led by Dr Rajeev.

The organs were donated by A.R. Aneesh (38), a native of Poozhanad in Thiruvananthapuram, who was declared brain-dead the other day. A total of eight organs were donated. One kidney, the heart, lungs, and two corneas were transplanted into patients at Kottayam Medical College.

The heart was given to a 59-year-old man from Thrissur, the lungs to a 27-year-old woman from Kottayam, and the kidney to a 38-year-old man from Pathanamthitta. Doctors said the surgeries were successful, but the next week will be crucial. Health Minister Veena George congratulated all the doctors and staff who led the surgeries.
