
KOLLAM: Two young men were killed yesterday afternoon when their car crashed into a parked tanker lorry on the National Highway elevated road near Umayanallur. The deceased have been identified as Charles (22) and San Joe (22), both natives of Kalakkode, Paravur.
The accident occurred around 3:30 PM near the Umayanallur Muslim Jamaat mosque. According to police, the car was travelling from the Kottiyam side and had just entered the elevated road from the service road. Approximately 100 meters onto the highway, the driver reportedly lost control and slammed into a tanker lorry belonging to Sivalaya Constructions.
The lorry was parked on the roadside at the time. Its driver, Chandeshwar Prasad (55), a native of Bihar, was seriously injured while cleaning the vehicle's windshield. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a private medical college hospital in Mevaram.
Local residents rushed to the scene and struggled to extricate the youths from the wreckage of the car. Although they were rushed to the hospital immediately, both succumbed to their injuries. The Fire Force from Kadappakkada and the Kottiyam police arrived shortly after to coordinate rescue efforts.
Charles is survived by his brothers, Shijin and Shiji. San Joe is survived by his brother, Sebin. Both bodies are currently being held at the hospital morgue.
