THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: LDF is eyeing a return to power in the Thiruvananthapuram corporation. BJP is dreaming of a coup to wrest control of the corporation that slipped out of their hands by a slender margin last time. Congress has fielded notable names in a bid to widen the party's presence in the capital, which is hitherto dominated by CPM and BJP. A strong three-way battle is likely in most wards while top leaders are being assigned responsibilities, thus intensifying the poll battle.

The representation of youngsters in the election fray increased, while experienced leaders also found a place on the list. The LDF, which won 53 wards last time, are working on ways to better their seat tally. The list of 93 candidates was released on Monday. The current mayor, Arya Rajendran, was not included. CPM district committee member S.P. Deepak is the mayoral candidate. The campaign activities are under the leadership of state committee member M. Vijayakumar and district secretary V. Joy.

The NDA, meanwhile, is churning out strategies with a fervour akin to assembly elections. 67 candidates have been announced. The work is under the direct supervision of BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Former BJP district president VV Rajesh is the mayoral candidate. Former DGP R. Sreelekha and former athlete Padmini Thomas are also in the fray.

The UDF, which announced its candidates very early, is trying to overcome the defeat faced in the last two local body elections. Veteran leader K Muraleedharan is heading the election campaigning for Congress. Former MLA KS Sabarinadhan is the mayoral candidate. In 2010, the UDF had won 40 seats. Last time, it was reduced to 10. Efforts are ongoing in UDF camp to increase the seat numbers to 50 this time.

Current party standings

(100 wards)

  • LDF 53
  • BJP 34
