THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rains in the state today. A yellow alert has been issued for seven districts today. There is a warning of heavy rain with thundershowers in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam. Heavy rain is defined as a situation where 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain is expected in 24 hours.

A cyclonic circulation is located over the Kanyakumari Sea and the Indian Ocean near the equator. A low-pressure area is felt in the Bay of Bengal. A new low-pressure area has formed over the Strait of Malacca and the south Andaman Sea. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and strengthen into an extreme low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 24.

The IMD has informed that it is likely to move west-northwestwards and re-strengthen over the southwest Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours. A cyclonic circulation is forming over the southeast Arabian Sea. Due to this, heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in Kerala till November 26, informed IMD. Fishing has been banned along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coasts till November 24.
