THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The glass bridge in Akkulam is slowly becoming one of the most sought-after locations on the capital city’s tourism map. People thronging to the space will be able to enjoy the serene view of Akkulam Lake and the aerial view of the city at a glance. This is the first glass bridge in the state built under the Tourism Department.
Earlier, due to construction defects, the bridge was closed for about a year to replace the cracked layers. The repairs and related construction were started following a study report by the Civil Division of NIT, Kozhikode, to increase safety on the bridge. It was Minister PA Mohammed Riyas who recently opened the bridge to the public.
The glass bridge is constructed in a sandwich pattern by arranging 1.5 mm laminations between 3 glass sheets of 12 mm thickness each. Artificial rain, fog, and modern lighting systems elevate the whole experience.
The construction was carried out by the Vattiyoorkavu Youth Brigade Entrepreneurs Cooperative Society (VYBKOS), a youth entrepreneurship cooperative society, in collaboration with the District Tourism Promotion Council. There are about ten high rope activities such as zipline and sky cycling, a frozen musical fountain, a laser show theatre, an Indian Air Force Museum, a 12D theatre, a computer gaming zone, a fish spa, a soft play area for children, a kids’ zone, a toy train, and many other entertainment facilities operating in the tourist village.
