NEW DELHI: India will switch completely to an electronic toll collection system within a year, eliminating the need for vehicles to wait in long queues at toll plazas, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha. The electronic system has already been implemented at 10 locations.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has developed a unified platform called Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) for digital toll payments. The new system uses FASTag, a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based tag attached to the vehicle’s windshield. Toll charges are automatically deducted from the user’s linked account.
