THALAPPUZHA: The court has awarded the death penalty to the man accused of murdering four people in Kodagu district. The sentence was handed down to Gireesh (38), a resident of Athimala Colony in Thalappuzha, Wayanad. The ruling was issued by Virajpet District Sessions Court Judge S. Nataraj. The case was fast-tracked, and the verdict came just eight and a half months after the killings. Public Prosecutor Yaseen Ahmed represented the prosecution.

The accused had murdered his wife Nagi, her five-year-old daughter Kaveri from her previous relationship, and Nagi’s grandparents Kari and Gauri. Gireesh, who was Nagi’s second husband, had been living with the family for a year.

The family lived in a tribal colony in Begur Balankad village, Ponnampet taluk, Kodagu. The murders came to light only the day after the incident. When Nagi and Gireesh did not show up for work even by noon, co-workers went to the house to check, where they found the bodies of the four victims.
