THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sending shockwaves to major political outfits, independent candidate Pattoor Radhakrishnan, who contested from Kannammoola ward of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, won by a margin of 373 votes.
As per reports, Radhakrishnan secured 1215 votes, the LDF candidate 842 votes, and the UDF candidate got 702 votes. The BJP got 514 votes. Although it was expected that the four namesake candidates( sharing the name Radhakrishnan) in the ward to pose a real threat, the four managed to get only 65 votes in total.
Radhakrishnan is also a former office bearer of the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club.
Meanwhile, the UDF won a landslide victory in the Muttada ward of Thiruvananthapuram. UDF candidate Vaishna Suresh won by 397 votes. Vaishna secured 1607 votes. There was controversy surrounding her candidature in the elections as she was initially removed from the voters’ list, citing an anomaly. There were strong allegations that the CPM and Mayor Arya Rajendran intervened and removed her name.
Later, Vaishna approached the High Court, obtaining a favourable verdict. Vaishna’s thumping victory in the Muttada seat, considered a bastion of the Left for years in Thiruvananthapuram, will surely give the reality dose to the communist party.
