THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The controversy surrounding the operation of Vattiyoorkavu MLA V. K. Prasanth’s office from a city corporation building continues to draw political attention. The issue is being actively used by his political opponents against Prasanth, who has earned recognition for his performance in the state capital as both mayor and later as an MLA. The primary allegation being circulated is that while MLAs receive Rs 25,000 as house rent allowance, Prasanth is using a corporation building by paying only Rs 800 as rent.
However, there is no provision for a separate house rent allowance for MLAs in Kerala. In fact, compared to many other states, Kerala is among those where legislators receive relatively lower monthly remuneration. According to 2025 figures, an MLA in Kerala receives a total of Rs 70,000 per month, including all allowances.
A detailed breakdown shows that this amount includes Rs 25,000 as constituency allowance, Rs 2,000 as fixed allowance, and Rs 20,000 as travel allowance. In addition, MLAs receive Rs 11,000 as telephone allowance, Rs 4,000 as information allowance, and Rs 8,000 for other expenses. Together, these components add up to the monthly total of Rs 70,000.
