KOCHI: G Santhakumari (90), mother of actor Mohanlal and wife of late K Viswanathan Nair (former law secretary), passed away on Tuesday. Santhakumari breathed her last at 1.35 pm yesterday at Mohanlal's residence 'Sree Ganesh' in Elamakkara. The body was taken to 'Hillview', the family home in Mudavanmugal Kesavadev Road, Thiruvananthapuram. The final rites will be held at the house at 4 pm today.

Mohanlal, his wife Suchitra Mohanlal and daughter Vismaya Mohanlal were present at the time of the death. Santhakumari’s other son is late Pyarelal. Grandchildren: Neeraj Pyarelal Vismaya Mohanlal and Pranav Mohanlal.

Santhakumari had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments for over a decade. She was undergoing treatment at Amrita Hospital and had difficulty speaking as a result of a stroke. Santhakumari, a native of Pathanamthitta, shifted to Thiruvananthapuram as her husband was a secretariat officer. The capital city didn’t take that long to awe her, as she lived in the same city for the next 39 years.

It was only after her husband’s death that Santhakumari Amma decided to move to her son Mohanlal’s house in Kochi. Actor Mammootty, Minister P. Rajeev, Hibi Eden MP, director Joshiy, singer MG Sreekumar and many others visited his house in Elamakkara and paid their respects.

Santhakumari Amma was the pillar of support for Mohanlal during his budding stage as an actor. The actor was very close to his mother. No matter where in the world Mohanlal was, the actor never missed his daily phone call with his mother. Mohanlal has written about his mother in various blogs and other writings. Last year, Mohanlal celebrated his mother's 89th birthday at his house in Elamakkara. Mohanlal started an organisation called Vishwasanthi Foundation by combining the names of his father and mother.
