India is carrying out several trials to achieve self-reliance in the defence sector. The latest among them is a test conducted recently by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket was successfully tested at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha.

Pinaka is a missile with a maximum range of 120 kilometres. The missile is named after the bow of Lord Shiva mentioned in ancient mythology. Living up to its name, the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket can hit targets with high accuracy. The test was a 100 per cent success, as planned. The Union Ministry of Defence stated that the rocket was closely monitored throughout the trial.

The Pinaka rocket was designed by the Armament Research and Development Establishment in collaboration with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, with support from the Defence Research and Development Laboratory and the Research Centre Imarat. The new Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket was launched from the existing Pinaka launcher. This has proved India’s capability to fire Pinaka rockets of different ranges from the same launcher.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO on the successful test. He said the addition of long-range missiles and excellence in design will further strengthen the capabilities of the Indian armed forces.
