WhatsApp status changed fortunes; Homemaker to Rs 1.15 lakh monthly salary, success story of Kummaly's Cake

KOTTAYAM: In 2020, during the inert days of the pandemic, Shavo Shini found solace in her favourite pastime, baking White Forest cake in a cooker. She couldn’t help but take a photo and upload it as her WhatsApp status. Never did she imagine that the status would change her fortunes and make her an entrepreneur with a monthly income of lakhs.

Shavo's Kummaly’s Home Cake is running the show today. The former homemaker now takes an income of Rs. 1.5 lakh per month. Various types of cakes are priced from Rs. 600 to Rs. 3500 per kg.

In 2020, some of her friends placed their first order after seeing the WhatsApp status. As word spread about the sumptuous cake, the demand surged. Shini relied on YouTube for more variety. She also sought advice from prominent chefs.

The venture was registered in 2021. It also got the Kudumbashree affiliation. Today, a part of the house is a Borma functioning 24 hours a day. Most orders are from the Kottayam and Ernakulam districts. Self-delivery on two-wheelers and cars is available too. Apart from this, Shini is also engaged in online dress material sales. Shavo, who studied Carnatic music, has also started a bhajan group.

Shavo is a native of Mevelloor, Kottayam. Her husband is Subin, a PRO of a private hospital. Her son is Fayon, a sixth-grade student.

Lotus biscoff with imported biscuit filling, Juicy Milk Cake with three types of milk, and Butter Scotch are the main attractions. Customised, fondant, themed, print cakes and dessert sets will be prepared.

“Anything is possible with hard work. Baking studio is my next dream,” said Shavo.
