Dangerous UV radiation levels persist in Kerala despite summer showers, warns to avoid direct sunlight

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state disaster management department said despite the summer showers in various parts of Kerala, there is no reduction in the level of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The summer showers help in temporarily reducing the temperature in the atmosphere. However, it is not enough to protect against the deadly UV radiation from the sun, said the officials.

Presently, the UV index remains dangerous in many districts. The highest UV rate was recorded in Idukki, Munnar (8). The UV rate is also high in Konni, Chengannur, Changanassery, Thrithatala, Ponnani and Mananthavady.

The radiation level decreases significantly only when the sky is completely covered with clouds during rain. However, summer rains are received only for a short time in isolated areas. Therefore, the present situation is that the radiation level increases rapidly when the rain clouds go and the sky becomes clear. The disaster management department has also advised people to be extremely cautious as it reaches dangerous levels again when the sun gets stronger.

Continuous exposure to ultraviolet rays for a long time can cause sunburns, skin diseases, eye diseases and other health issues. The highest UV index is recorded between 10 am and 3 pm. Therefore, there is a warning to avoid direct sunlight on the body for a long time during these hours.
