Dispute with mother-in-law over cooking; engineer commits suicide

BENGALURU: A tech professional committed suicide following a dispute with her mother-in-law. The deceased has been identified as Sushma, a 35-year-old native of Bengaluru. She was a former employee of the IT company Dell. Her husband is Puneet Kumar. The couple has a four-year-old son.

Sushma and Puneet got married five years ago. According to the police, there were frequent arguments at home. Recently, Sushma had a dispute with Puneet’s mother, Kalpana, over cooking. Relatives of Sushma alleged that Kalpana did not allow Sushma to cook food. They also alleged that Kalpana often used to insult her daughter-in-law for various reasons. It is believed that Sushma took the extreme step following the emotional distress caused by these issues.

Relatives have also accused her husband’s family of harassing her over dowry. Based on the complaint, police arrested Puneet Kumar. They said that efforts are underway to trace Kalpana, who is currently absconding.
