THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The capital city witnessed a transformative celebration of inclusivity today as the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC) hosted Innovation Day 2026. The event was marked by the vibrant and inspiring presence of differently-abled children from various districts across Kerala, whose participation turned a technical showcase into a powerful statement on human potential and social integration.

The atmosphere at the venue was one of immense joy and enthusiasm, reaching its peak during a heartwarming interaction between the children and the Minister for Local Self-Governments, Shri M.B. Rajesh. Moving beyond formal protocols, the Minister spent significant time engaging with the young attendees, listening to their stories, and joining them for photographs. This personal interaction served as a highlight of the day, reflecting a deep commitment to ensuring that every child feels seen and valued within the state’s developmental vision.

Central to the day’s proceedings was the state-level distribution of specialised Assistive, Adaptive, and Cognitive devices. These tools are not merely technological aids but are the result of K-DISC’s pioneering STRIDE (Social Technology and Research for Inclusive Design Excellence) initiative. In a remarkable shift toward participatory design, these devices were developed with the direct involvement of differently-abled individuals themselves, ensuring that the final products truly meet their unique needs. This collaborative process involved a synergy between higher education institutions, the Child Development Centre (CDC), and various hospitals to create solutions that foster independence and dignity.

During his address, Minister M.B. Rajesh emphasised that the ideas and talents of these children must be nurtured to their fullest potential. He lauded the efforts of K-DISC’s Social Enterprise and Inclusion wing, noting that projects like STRIDE act as a beacon for a modern society by bridging the gap between innovation and accessibility. Supporting this vision, Dr Thomas Isaac, Chief Advisor of Vigyan Keralam, handed over the devices to the children, highlighting their crucial role in enhancing both learning and daily life.

The event also featured an extensive exhibition and an expert-led panel session. The exhibition provided parents and children with a firsthand look at how inclusive design can dismantle barriers, while the panel discussion focused on the broader themes of disability justice and sustainable livelihoods. K-DISC Executive Director Robin Tommy remarked that the program is a testament to the government’s resolve to build a "New Kerala" where every citizen can navigate society independently and with absolute equality. Making Kerala an inclusive innovation hub and a model of inclusion for other states in India.

Innovation Day 2026 stands as a significant milestone in Kerala's journey toward social innovation. By bringing together students, BUDS school teachers, social technology experts, and policymakers, the event underscored a collective commitment to making advanced assistive technology a fundamental right rather than a luxury.
