CHENNAI: In a move that has sent ripples across the political landscapes of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Indian National Congress today officially announced its candidate list for the 2026 Assembly Elections, featuring a high-stakes strategic nomination. Dr. T.T. Praveen, the Secretary of the CSI South Kerala Diocese (Maha Idavaka), has been fielded as the party's candidate for the Vilavancode constituency in Kanyakumari.
The selection of Dr. Praveen is being viewed by political analysts not just as a bid to retain a traditional stronghold, but as a calculated maneuver to influence the upcoming elections in neighboring Kerala. The CSI South Kerala Diocese holds immense sway over several key constituencies in Thiruvananthapuram district, including Neyyattinkara, Parasala, Nemom, Kovalam, Aruvikkara, and Kattakada.
By giving a top Church official a prominent platform in Tamil Nadu, the Congress-led UDF aims to consolidate the influential "Sabha" vote bank in Kerala, where a tight triangular contest between the LDF, UDF, and NDA is currently unfolding.
Speaking to the press following the announcement, Dr. Praveen expressed confidence in his candidacy.
"The people will not abandon a party that has shown such courtesy and respect to the Sabha. We will work tirelessly to ensure that this bond translates into a decisive mandate," he stated.
Praveen also addressed the political situation in Kerala, noting that a formal decision regarding the Sabha’s official support for the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the state would be finalised by tomorrow. He dismissed concerns about the challenge in Vilavancode, claiming the constituency remains a "Congress bastion" and predicting a victory margin of over 50,000 votes.
