THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A 21-year-old woman has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody following the brutal murder of her newborn child in Poozhanadu. The incident, which initially surfaced as a medical emergency involving postpartum complications, was identified as a homicide after medical examinations revealed fatal injuries on the infant.
The events occurred on Sunday, April 5, when the accused, identified as Shamna, gave birth to a baby alone at her residence. According to investigators, the infant was killed immediately following delivery. The baby’s throat was slit with a blade, and the child was further suffocated by hand.
In an attempt to hide the act, the body was wrapped in a bedsheet and concealed under a bed. The situation shifted in the afternoon when Shamna’s husband, Altaf, a butcher shop employee, returned home from work. Finding his wife in a critical state due to heavy bleeding and abdominal pain, he arranged for an autorickshaw to transport her to the hospital.
The crime was discovered by chance when Altaf entered the bedroom to retrieve his wife's footwear and found the blood-stained bundle hidden beneath the furniture. Although the infant was also transported to the hospital, medical staff confirmed the child was deceased. Hospital authorities notified the police after an initial examination of the body showed clear signs of physical trauma.
Investigators state that the accused felt incapable of supporting a second child, as the couple already has a two-year-old. Meanwhile, Altaf has maintained that neither he nor his family members were aware of the pregnancy. Following her medical discharge, Shamna was arrested by the Aryancode Police.
The Aryancode SHO confirmed that while the accused is currently remanded, the police will soon seek custody for a formal scene reconstruction and further evidence collection.
