KOLKATA: Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami responded to not receiving a call-up to the national squad despite his fiery performances in the IPL and domestic cricket. Shami clarified that he wants to focus on hard work instead of chasing social media fame. He was speaking at the inauguration of the third season of the Bengal Pro Twenty20 League.
“We people are like workers. Our only job is to bowl. Injuries and ups and downs are natural in a career. But don't give up on hard work," says Shami.
Shami also warned that chasing after luxuries and social media fame can become a weakness for a sportsperson. Shami added that he, who was born in a farming family in UP, has not forgotten his heritage and considers Bengal his home.
Shami is currently a trusted bowler for Lucknow Super Giants. Shami's performance in the last match against Hyderabad, where he took two wickets for just nine runs in four overs, was considered by many as a fitting reply to the selectors. Shami will next play against the Kolkata Knight Riders at his home ground, Eden Gardens.
"I know the pitch and conditions at Eden very well. That experience will be useful for me when I play for Lucknow against KKR," Shami said. Ajinkya Rahane and Rinku Singh were also present at the ceremony. Shami's words were evident in his dismay at being left out of the team despite his impressive performances.
