THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Health University in Kerala is set to introduce a code of conduct for teachers in medical and dental colleges to prevent misconduct and eliminate physical and mental harassment of students. The university will issue guidelines asking teachers to treat students in a friendly and sensitive manner, especially those who join directly after Plus Two. The aim is to ensure that students do not face mental stress. Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohanan Kunnummal told Kerala Kaumudi that the university will ensure a caring approach towards students.
Teachers will be instructed that discrimination based on caste, colour, religion, parents’ profession, or economic background is unconstitutional. Strict action, including dismissal, will be taken against those who violate the rules. The move comes after the death of Nithin Raj, allegedly linked to harassment by teachers at a dental college in Kannur.
The university will also conduct training sessions for teachers, emphasising equal treatment of all students. Teachers will be told not to unnecessarily summon, threaten, interrogate, or humiliate students. Internal marks should not be used to intimidate students and must follow clear criteria. Strong action will be taken against violations.

Teachers should submit affidavit
Teachers will be required to submit an affidavit at the time of appointment stating that they will not engage in discrimination or misconduct towards students. Strict action, including termination, will be taken in case of violations.
“No form of cruelty towards students will be tolerated. It is the responsibility of teachers to handle young students with care,” said Dr Mohanan Kunnummal.
