Tragedy at Valparai hairpin bend

The rope bridge between life and death can snap at any moment, whether through accidents, natural disasters, or pandemics like COVID-19. It has been only a few days since the disappearance of Sreenanda, a 15-year-old girl from Kadampazhipuram, shocked Kerala. While travelling with a group of 40 people—including her parents—she fell from a mountaintop into a gorge without anyone witnessing the fall. Her body was recovered only after an agonising four-day search. Before the grief of that tragedy could fade, Kerala has been shaken once again by the deaths of nine members of a tour group from Pang Government LP School in Palliparamba, Malappuram.

While navigating the 13th hairpin bend on the Valparai-Pollachi road, the tempo traveller lost control and overturned multiple times, skidding down the slope before coming to a rest at the 9th bend. The accident occurred around 5:30 PM on Friday. The tragedy claimed the lives of nine individuals: Headmistress Ajitha; teachers Ramla, Suhra, Asha, and Abdul Majeed; Majeed’s wife, Ruqiya; the school cook, Sajitha; Suhra's twelve-year-old son, Hisham; and Shakina, a teacher from the nearby Pang GUPS.

Among the victims was Abdul Majeed, a beloved teacher who, despite being blind in both eyes, served as an extraordinary example of resilience for both his students and the local community. His blindness never deterred him from exploring the world; he was able to visit beautiful places alongside his colleagues, supported by the deep bonds of their love and friendship. His wife, Ruqiya, who had accompanied him to be his eyes on this trip, tragically joined him on his final journey as well.

Every individual lost in this tragedy was deeply cherished by the students of Pang School. The group, led by the headmistress, had set out for Valparai to celebrate the start of the summer vacation. Now, the group photo taken during their journey through Athirapally—filled with smiles and anticipation—remains a hauntingly beautiful memory of their final days together.

Global conflicts and international tensions pose a grave threat to the peace and stability of modern life. In the post-COVID era, this sense of uncertainty has only deepened, fueling a global desire to seize every available opportunity for joy and moments of respite. The significant surge in both domestic and foreign tourism is a direct reflection of this "live in the moment" mindset. However, destinations like Valparai, while breathtakingly beautiful, are fraught with peril. From the 13th hairpin bend, the stunning vista of the Aliyar Dam unfolds below; yet, despite clear warning signs prohibiting travellers from stopping to admire the view, many ignore the risks. Illegally parked vehicles frequently obstruct the narrow passage, creating a treacherous environment that invites accidents for others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed their profound condolences over the tragedy. The accident was first discovered by passing tourists, whose swift reporting enabled the authorities from both Tamil Nadu and Kerala to launch a coordinated rescue operation. Officials from the Malappuram and Palakkad districts took a leading role in the efforts, while Ministers K. Krishnankutty and V. Sivankutty arrived at the scene shortly after to oversee the operations and provide necessary instructions.

Every accident is a tragedy, but the loss of so many dedicated educators from Pang School is a profound blow to their families, students, and the entire community. Typically, accidents that capture national attention are followed by investigations and expert recommendations, yet far too many of these findings are left to gather dust in bureaucratic files. It is a stark reminder that when planning any excursion—especially through treacherous high-range terrain—an experienced driver is non-negotiable. The safety and mechanical fitness of the vehicle must be meticulously verified; even with newer models, there is no room for complacency. We must never forget that the lives of every passenger depend entirely on the integrity of the vehicle’s safety systems.
