THRISSUR: In wake of the Mundathikode tragedy claiming the lives of 14 people, there will be no fireworks for Thrissur Pooram this time. The decision was taken at the joint meeting convened by the government with representatives of the Vadakkunnathan Temple, Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu devaswoms. The authorities have decided to conduct the festival in a strictly ritualistic manner, minimizing grandeur following the disaster. As part of this, the iconic Kudamattam will be scaled down significantly, fewer than 10 umbrellas will be used, compared to the usual elaborate display, this marks a major shift for one of Kerala’s most celebrated festivals, reflecting the somber mood following the accident.

The fireworks are usually held at the end of the Pooram. Instead of these fireworks, Kathina will be burst. However, there will be no difference in the number of elephants and the melam. 15 elephants will be lined up on both sides. The daytime fireworks after the pakalpooram have also been canceled. The elephants to be given to the constituent temples and the matters related to their processions will remain unchanged. Fireworks were avoided when the fireworks disaster occurred in 2006. Fireworks were not held during the Covid period either.
